My mom has always enjoyed telling us stories about all the batches of kittens they had when she was a young girl. Recently she has had good reason to share these stories with my children. Two of her "barn" cats (who happen to spend most of their time over by the house and love playing with my children) have had kittens-11 total. My kids have had so much fun going out and cuddling the kitties and helping grandma feed and water their mamas every day.
This morning Brandt and Kylie headed out to the barn while grandma was working on some stuff in the backyard. Before long she saw both kids coming toward her across the field, sobbing and carrying 2 of the kittens. Sadly, they had found that the other 4 kittens in that batch had been killed in the night. She helped them find a box that the 4 siblings would fit in, and then grandpa took us to a field down on 2nd lane after I got home from work. He carefully dug a hole and put the kitties in it as my children solemnly looked on.
Of course, events such as this often bring back memories of when we have lost other pets as well as family members, so buddy spent a good part of the evening talking about his dog Sarge and Great Grandpa and Grandma Pugmire. What a great opportunity to talk to my kids about the plan of salvation! And when I don't think to bring it up first, which is often the case, Brandt does and that makes me a happy mama!
